Inkscape Beginner Tips

There are some basic settings and operations that should be taken into consideration that should help in completing Inkscape tutorials as well as help in mastering the Inkscape Tool Sets. Below are a few tips which will help with some of the tutorials on the site.

Inkscape Beginner: Bezier Path

How to draw a Bezier Path in Inkscape

  1. Use the Bezier Tool vsd_bezier_tool from the Tool Box at the left side of the screen.
  2. Find an empty space on the canvas.vsd_bezier_step1
  3. Click on the canvas and hold the mouse button down whilst moving in the direction where you want the curve to go. This sets the control handle for the Bezier path (direction). In this case the mouse was moved to the right.vsd_bezier_step2
  4. Release the mouse button and move the mouse a bit upwards, a preview of the curve is shown in red.vsd_bezier_step3
  5. When the curve looks good, click again to fix the node, but do not release the mouse if you want to continue your curve smoothly. Repeat the previous steps (drag mouse, release mouse button, click again when curve looks good but again... keep mouse button down and drag, and so on). The fixed path of the curve will be shown in green, the flexible part of the path in red (as above).vsd_bezier_step4
  6. When you are happy with the curve, finish it by hitting enter on the keyboard (or click with the right mouse button).
  7. The path can be edited at all times with the Node Tool. vsd_node_tool

There are many options to edit or 'sculpt' a path using the Node Tool and if you are new to Inkscape I'll advise you to read "Editing Paths" in Inkscape: Guide to a Vector Drawing Program by Tavmjong Bah.
